What is Sexological Bodywork?

Sexological bodywork and somatic sex education is a rapidly growing field that attracts professionals from diverse backgrounds – bodyworkers, sex workers, counsellors, educators. All practitioners all go through a certification process, but end up with their own take on the modality, their own specialties and areas of interest. What links their approaches is a focus on embodiment, celebration of pleasure and modelling of non-judgemental curiosity about the experience of their clients.

What do sexological bodyworkers do? What happens in a session?

The short answer is we keep people company while they learn about pleasure in their bodies.

The focus is on your learning so first we set a learning objective for your session. Practitioners always remain fully clothed, touch is one way & genital or anal touch if it occurs is gloved.

We will practise saying yes & no and you will be encouraged to continue exploring this during your session. We are looking for full body enthusiastic yes’s.

I will offer a guided meditation & then after your reflection offer a couple of practises that you may like to explore to support your learning.

What happens while we are practising by “doing” is that our brain is building new neural pathways which will grow stronger if we continue to practise. This leads to more pleasure pathways & potentially more pleasure & less stress in our daily lives.

When you have decided on your practise we will always be two way creative collaboration. We then work with practises such as breath work, touch meditations, somatic movement, awareness exercises, sensation rituals, depending on what best supports your learning.

You will often hear the phrase “embrace the clunky”. This mantra abounds among somatic sex educators, and is informed by recent developments in learning theory and research in neuroplasticity. The clunki-ness is where learning happens – where your brain rewires itself to form new connections and strengthen these connections with practice. Allowing for clunkiness relieves the anxiety that all too often arises from the pressure to perform, to get things right, to flow effortlessly in sex.

At the end of the session we will discuss practises for you to continue with at home.
